Crucible Tool Steel and Specialty Alloy General Information

A2 and D2 are familiar to most tool builders and tool users as common, general purpose cold work tool steels. They combine good all around performance properties for stamping and forming with low cost, wide availability, and relatively easy fabrication. However, they sometimes do not provide the level of performance needed for high volume

Best Knife Steel Comparison Steel Charts & Guide Blade HQ

The best blade steels exhibit a balance of strength and toughness. Blade steels with an insane amount of hardness (pushing towards 70 HRC) tend to lack stability and can suffer from cracks, chipping, and total failure. Extremely tough blades may not cut as well as desired and can suffer from edge rolling and difficulty maintaining an edge.

How Good is D2 Tool Steel? BladeForums

Feb 16, 2017 · It's harder to sharpen and holds a decent edge, but for the price it's pretty good. Personally I would choose well heat treated Aus 8 or S30V over D2, simply because I think all steels have trade off's and for my usage D2 isn't a good fit. But for the right price and the right use it's a fine steel.

S2 Tool Steel Shock Resisting Steel (UNS T41902)

The machinability rating of S2 tool steels is 85% of that of the W group steels. Forming. S2 tool steels are formed using conventional procedures under annealed conditions. Welding. S2 tool steels are readily weldable using standard methods. Heat Treatment. S2 tool steels are slowly preheated to 649ºC (1200ºF) and then directly heated by increasing the temperature to 871ºC (1600ºF).

A2 vs O1 Tool Steel The Wood Whisperer

While “stainless” amounts of chromium (12% or more) make tool steel gummy and hard to sharpen, the modest amount of chromium in A2 improves its toughness and abrasion resistance, but imparts only a slight measure of corrosion resistance (like high carbon steel, it
