Jun 02, 2007 · 1045 is a shallow hardening steel and needs all the help it can get as it's quenched down thru the temp. range of ~1250 800 deg F. It only has a few seconds to get thru that range or soft pearlite will form, preventing the necessary martensite from forming at lower temps.
